Database Infrastructure and DB Services

Database and Directory Services (DBDS) can be defined as any service that provides a “look-up” function, meaning that there is useful information stored in a database or directory that is either used directly as a business or end-user service application or service or used in support of a business or end-user service.

For example, Calling Name database, is used directly for an end-user service, enhanced caller ID. In contrast, ENUM is always used in conjunction with another service, such as VoIP, which requires PSTN-to-IP address mapping.
